Choose the anchor
Pick a layer you already wear comfortably and that works with the expected temperature. Try it over the tops you plan to bring before committing.
Check every combination
Lay out the bottoms and shoes beside the layer. If it only works with one outfit, consider a more flexible piece already in your closet.
Wear the bulky piece
If the layer is comfortable in transit, wear it instead of folding it into the bag. Keep the rest of the clothing light and appropriate for planned activities.
Should the layer be formal?
Only if the trip needs it. Fit, warmth and repeatability matter more than a dress code you will not use.
